Burnout can be caused by a multitude of different factors that take an effect both physically and mentally. Many studies have looked at the causes of burnout in athletes (including youth athletes), coaches, athletic trainers, and other sports professionals. The causes of burnout can be from situational factors or even personality characteristics.

- High training volumes and time demands
- Pressure to perform from self/parents/coaches
- Frequent intense competition - no opportunity to just have fun
- High trait anxiety
- Perfectionism
- Coach involvement - inconsistent feedback, negative feedback
- Constant injuries
- Limited social relationships

- Physical - injury, overtraining, feeling tired all the time, lack of physical growth, inconsistent performance, and losing.
- Logistical - travel grind, not having enough time for friends
- Social/Interpersonal - unhappy with social life, negative parental influences, competing with sibling for parent's attention, negative team atmosphere, cheating by competitors, unhelpful coaches
- Psychological - unfulfilled goals/inappropriate expectations, plateaud improvement of ability, lack of enjoyment, pressure to win and play well, lack of motivation (Gould, 2011)
